Displaying two windows simultaneously

The platform interface is focused on single-window applications, but it includes the option to display two forms in a single window. This can be handy for comparing two documents, or two reports featuring different time periods.

There are two ways of adding the second window:

  • Dock one of the windows
  • Show two windows side-by-side

As a result, the second window is displayed in the work area of the main window.

You can navigate between double windows by clicking Back and Forward buttons or by using keyboard shortcuts, which is identical to navigation between regular single windows.

Commands for docking or showing windows side-by-side are available when the following conditions are met:

  • The current form is not the start page.
  • A form is open in the main window work area.
  • The current form does not block the interface.
Docking windows

A docked window is displayed next to the main window work area (therefore, it is always displayed in the main window).

The following rules apply to docked windows:

  • A single window can be docked at a time.
  • Once a new window is docked, the previous one is undocked.
  • A docked window cannot be displayed side-by-side with another window.

To dock a window, use one of the following commands: Dock left, Dock right, Dock top, or Dock bottom. The commands are available in the following menus:

  • In the system command area: the Dock/Show side-by-side button.
  • In the main menu: the Windows submenu.
  • In the context menu of an open window or an opened items panel item.

Once a docked window is closed, the main window work area reverts to its original size.

To undock a window, use the Undock/Show separately command of an open window or an opened items panel item.

Showing windows side-by-side

Windows shown side-by-side are two windows displayed together in the main window work area. Switching to one of these windows displays them both.

The following rules apply to windows displayed side-by-side:

  • A single window can be displayed side-by-side with a single other window.
  • A docked window cannot be displayed side-by-side with another window.

To show a window side-by-side with another window, use one of the following commands: Show side-by-side (horizontally) or Show side-by-side (vertically). The commands are available in the following menus:

  • In the system command area: the Dock/Show side-by-side button.
  • In the main menu: the Windows submenu.
  • In the context menu of an open window or an opened items panel item.

You can also use the Show side-by-side with current window (horizontally) or Show side-by-side with current window (vertically) command of an opened items panel item.

The commands do the following:

  • Show side-by-side (vertically). The window selected in the submenu is displayed to the right of the current window. If the command is executed from the context menu of a window that is not the current one, the application switches to that window.
  • Show side-by-side (horizontally). The window selected in the submenu is displayed below the current window. If the command is executed from the context menu of a window that is not the current one, the application switches to that window.
  • Show side-by-side with current window (vertically). The current window is displayed at the left.
  • Show side-by-side with current window (horizontally). The current window is displayed above.

To detach the windows from each other, use the Undock/Show separately command of an open window or an opened items panel item.
